Fibroids, Fertility, and Gut Health

According to the National Institutes of Health, 30% of women age 25 – 44 report fibroid-related symptoms such as lower back pain, heavy periods, or painful periods. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of uterine muscle tissue. Also called leiomyoma, they may sometimes cause infertility, miscarriage, and preterm labor. They are a possible consequence of estrogen dominance.

Various surgical methods are available to remove them, but what if you are not a candidate for surgery? What else can you do?

A 2012 study published in the journal Biology of Reproduction showed that giving rats vitamin D shrank fibroid tumors by 75%, whereas untreated rats showed no change in fibroid size.

How much vitamin D did they use, you may wonder? It was equivalent to a daily human dose of about 1400 IU.

But what about humans? In a study published in 2013 in the International Journal of Women’s Health, low vitamin D was correlated with occurrence of uterine fibroids. When they stratified the data between Black and white women, this correlation was especially significant for Black women.

What if you are already taking vitamin D, and you know your level is sufficient?

There is a lesser known supplement you may consider taking — calcium d-glucarate. Calcium-d-glucarate is calcium bound to D-glucaric acid, which is found in foods such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, apples, oranges, and grapefruit. Calcium d-glucarate forms conjugates with unwanted estrogenic hormones and environmental toxins, which are then eliminated from the body instead of being reabsorbed.

How would you know if you could benefit from calcium d-glucarate? A comprehensive stool analysis that looks at many details of your microbiome would show elevated beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that allows excess estrogen to be reabsorbed and recirculated. This excess estrogen drives fibroid growth.

If you have fibroid symptoms, are on a whole foods diet, and have already reached optimal vitamin D levels, you may benefit from a stool analysis to see if you have elevated beta-glucuronidase. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation here to see if this may be the key to unlock your fertility!
